Mechanical efficiency and propulsion technique after 7 weeks of low-intensity wheelchair training

By Admin on February 20th, 2009

Mechanical efficiency and propulsion technique after 7 weeks of low-intensity wheelchair training

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the effect of a 7-week low-intensity hand rim handicap scooters training on the submaximal metabolic cost, mechanical efficiency and propulsion technique in able-bodied participants. METHODS: Participants were randomly divided over an experimental group (n=14) and a control group (n=7). The experimental group received 7 weeks wheelchair training (3 week(-1), 70 min) at a low intensity (30% of the heart rate reserve), whereas the control group did not receive training. During pre- and post-tests, submaximal exercise was performed on a stationary wheelchair ergometer at fixed levels of power output. Mechanical efficiency, oxygen uptake, heart rate, timing parameters and stroke angles were measured. Video recordings were made to determine the stroke pattern. FINDINGS: Mechanical efficiency increased and metabolic cost decreased significantly in the experimental group compared to the control group. Push time increased and cycle frequency decreased as a result of training. The stroke angle increased in the experimental group during the training period. The experimental group preferred double-looping over propulsion, while the control group mainly used single-looping over propulsion patterns during the post-test. INTERPRETATION: A low-intensity, 7-week training protocol has a beneficial effect on the mechanical efficiency and metabolic cost of medical scooters propulsion in able-bodied participants. The improved mechanical efficiency seems to be the result of changes in propulsion technique that were found

By Admin on February 20th, 2009

Executive Cover Letters Bring Big Results

If you’re ready to accept a new job as an executive in an organization, then be sure to make that clear in an executive cover letter that is well-written, focused, and brief. Executive cover letters should include information pertinent to the opening you’re bidding for. You might want to be the executive vice president of a bank or the executive manager of a retail store. If so, be sure to mention your related experience. Perhaps you were in finance at one time or in sales. Bring that expertise to the table in your executive cover letter.

Land a Banking Job With a Cover Letter for a Banking Professional

By Admin on February 14th, 2009

Land a Banking Job With a Cover Letter for a Banking Professional

Does working in a bank appeal to you? If so, go for it with a cover letter example for a banking professional. You might want to be hired as a teller, an account executive, a loan officer, or a clerk. Whatever your goal, you can move closer to it by writing a cover letter for a banking professional that includes details about your education, expertise, interest in the job and why you’re a good candidate for it. Of course you’ll attach a resume too, but the letter is a more personal document that gives the hiring manager a chance to learn something about you as a person. Be sure to end your cover letters for banking professionals by asking for an in-person meeting to discuss the job.

Comparison of mobility device delivery within Department of Veterans Affairs for individuals with multiple sclerosis versus spinal cord injury

Comparison of mobility device delivery within Department of Veterans Affairs for individuals with multiple sclerosis versus spinal cord injury

Individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS) report decreased satisfaction with their handicap scooters devices compared with individuals with spinal cord injuries (SCIs). This study (1) investigated the demographic differences between veterans with MS (V-MS) and veterans with SCI (V-SCI) who were issued a wheelchair by the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) and (2) described differences in mobility device prescription. We merged two VHA databases to obtain demographic and wheelchair information for all V-MS and V-SCI in 2000 and 2001. Descriptive information for issued wheelchairs was available for 2,154 V-MS and V-SCI. We found that V-MS were significantly less likely to receive higher quality wheelchairs (manual or power) compared with V-SCI (p < 0.001). The disparity in VHA medicare power wheelchairs prescription between these two groups indicates a need for further research regarding the assistive device prescription process in these populations.

Attacking Anxiety - Is My Anxiety Normal?

By Admin on February 11th, 2009

By Ben Needles

You might wonder whether or not the anxiety you feel is normal. Here are some examples to help you understand everyday experiences of anxiety.

Q: Help! Im deathly afraid of heights! Is this normal?
A: Lots of people have things that make them afraid. If you are afraid of heights, its not considered to be a problem or abnormal unless it is interfering with your life. Consider the following example: your sisters wedding is going to be a mountainside resort with cliffside views, and youre considering not attending. In this situation, clearly, the anxiety is ruling your life. If this is the case for you, then your fears are taking over your life and you should seek help to learn to overcome your fear of heights.

Q: My friend suddenly passed away, and Im having nightmares and feeling anxious about it. Whats wrong with me?
A: Its not unusual to find yourself thinking about someone whom you have lost, or even to dream about them. The best thing to do is allow yourself to deal with the loss in your usual way of dealing with sad events. If you find that you continue to have nightmares, that your anxiety is increasing over time or interfering with your life, then you may want to consider seeking professional help.

Q: My significant other says that I worry too much. Is this true?
A: It depends. Everybody worries now and then. Everybody goes through situations, which might trigger more worry than usual. However, for some people, worry begins to interfere with their ability to think, to concentrate, to relax and/or to enjoy life. At the point that it begins to interfere with your everyday life, then you should consider seeking help.

Q: I have to give a presentation for my class, and Im feeling really anxious about talking in front of other people. What should I do?
A: Many people feel nervous when they have to give public presentations. As mentioned in the above example, its not considered to be a problem unless it is interfering with your life. Thus, if your hands are shaking a little and your voice isnt as steady as it could be during your presentation, but you get through your presentation, then you are probably just a bit nervous and your nerves will get better with more practice. Giving your presentation is the best thing that you can do to decrease your anxiety. If your anxiety is so intense that you skip the class on the day you are supposed to give the presentation, then you should seek professional help to work through your anxiety.

Q: I not only have trouble giving presentations, but I find that I cant really talk to people and I get really nervous when I try to make conversations with people.
A: Its okay to feel anxious when talking to new people or to people whom you want to impress. It becomes a problem when it starts to interfere with your ability to meet people and build relationships. People who experience this type of anxiety often feel alone because of fears of rejection or embarrassment. It may even be difficult to talk to a therapist. If your anxiety around other people is getting in the way of having the types of relationships you want, then you would likely benefit from professional help.

In the above examples, you can see that anxiety can be felt in many everyday situations. In fact, our bodies are built to be afraid and to feel anxiety, and these feelings are a way to protect our safety. However, this safety mechanism can become problematic when it not only protects, but becomes out of your control and gets in the way of what you want to do in life. In this case, you dont need to suffer - you should consider seeking professional help (e.g., seeing a therapist or counselor) from someone who can understand your situation.

Adult Toys No Longer Socially Taboo For Most

By Admin on February 10th, 2009

By John Sern

Once upon a time, the only way you could get a glimpse at an adult toy was to order a catalog through the mail that was then sent discreetly in an unidentified brown paper wrapper or unmarked envelope to your home or post office box. From the moment you placed the order for the catalog, you would watch the mail delivery daily and rush to get the mail to ensure that when your catalog came it didnt fall into the hands of anyone else in the home, especially your children or possibly even your spouse.

For the most part, those days are gone. People of all ages are becoming more comfortable and subsequently more liberal in their thinking and attitudes towards adult toys and the benefits they can provide for a healthy relationship between two people. Likewise, with the introduction of the Internet and the possibility of accessing adult toy web sites from the comfort and privacy of your computer, theres no waiting for a catalog to arrive by mail and no worrying about someone else spying into your catalog.

The decrease in taboo restrictions on adult toys may be, in part, due to the liberated thoughts of many regarding same sex marriages. Although this is topic is still very much unacceptable for virtually all religious beliefs, there are areas where such marriages are not only acceptable but are also legal to engage in.

Adult toys are a great way to liven up a healthy marriage with some variety and spice. Although the majority of toys are made for women, there are pleasure toys available for men as well. In any case, what is comfortable for one person may be uncomfortable, embarrassing or simply undesirable for another person. So if you are going to purchase an adult toy for your mate, you should discuss it with them first to be sure that its mutually desirable to use such an item.

Adult toys provide for added stimulation when used properly and can also offer hours of pleasure that might not otherwise be possible. Some toys operate by battery power, allowing for use in water or anywhere else that using a cord may be inconvenient.

With people becoming more comfortable with their own bodies and in some social circles more acceptance of body shapes and sizes of all types whether tall or short, fat or skinny. Couples who are returning their focus to what really matters, which is acceptance of self and others, are coming to realize that adult toys are no longer socially taboo because they are pleasure items to be shared between two people who are engaged in a loving, committed relationship with each other.

Adult toy manufacturers have also returned to the drawing board and expanded the types of toys available to include items that are playful, engaging and arousing. Gone are the days of noisy vibrators that remain stationary and stimulate just one spot and here to stay, it seems, are the options to choose from different types of toys that can take sensual and sexual pleasure to new heights.

Viboutique.com is a great resource for couples who want to spice up their relationships with vibrators and sex toys. Make sure to visit us at http://www.viboutique.com
